THE FIRST VISITORS
Within half a mile of Blunham is the Great North Road, originally built by the Romans (Ermine Street) between 60-70 AD to link Londinium (London) and Eboracum (York). Every 1,000 paces of the army's march there would be resting place, or "mille" (thousand) post, hence our modern measure of one "mile". There is no record of any Roman settlement at Blunham although there were a number in the district.
