THE DARK AGES (500 - 1065 A.D.)
Blunham was originally a Saxon village, probably established in the 6th or 7th century, but by the 9th century was (like most of the neighbouring villages) subject to regular violent attacks by the Vikings, who would sail up the river in their longboats.
Eventually, at one decisive battle in the nearby village of Willington, the Vikings were beaten (an event still celebrated to this day). The Viking (or Dane) fortress in the next door village of Tempsford was attacked and captured in 921 AD (as recorded in the Saxon Chronicles). The one relic from those distant days is the font in the village church which is the only original Saxon item still remaining in Blunham.
